I try to eat as much organic food as I can. For the best possible health, I want to avoid pesticides and other problem chemicals that can be found in conventionally grown food.

Organic food proponents have long contended that these foods are healthier for you. Those growing and promoting conventionally grown foods disagree.

study conducted at the University of Barcelona shows that organic tomatoes contain higher levels of phenolic compounds than conventional tomatoes. Phenolic compounds, natural antioxidants in plants, are organic molecules found in many vegetables with proven human health benefits.

It’s good that more stores are carrying organic food. I buy organic chicken, spinach, and strawberries at Costco, and occasionally get items at Safeway’s organic produce section.

My main sources of organic food are local food coops and farmers’ markets.
